the globe that started a friendship

It was the 80's

My own company, no HR department, no political correctness.

I had many clients but one was unlike the others. I had been working with him for a year, never having met him. Just phone, fax and a mountain of details. Wayne was extremely particular about every detail from imprint size to PMS colors of the GlobeGround logo. You name it, he questioned it.

Then came "the globe". The $1.00 globe.

Of course a sample was needed, and of course he questioned the imprint area.

I told him it was 8.5".

The sample was delivered and I get a call from Wayne. He sounds annoyed and says "I received the sample and I don't think the imprint area is 8.5".

I had had enough.

I leaned back in my chair and said:

Wayne, here's what I want you to do. Unzip your pants, pull out your dick and see if that measures 8.5".

Silence.

“We need to have lunch. I need to meet the person who had the balls to say this to me.”

It was the start of a beautiful friendship.

 We became friends. Real friends.
I went to his parties on Long Island. We spent Halloweens together.

And the story of that ridiculous phone call followed us everywhere.

Eventually, whenever Wayne introduced me to someone new, he didn't need my name.

He'd simply say: “This is the 8.5 girl.”

At some point, Wayne made me a ruler.
By hand.

On one side: TO: B
B was Broccoli. I told him my hair looked looked like broccoli.

On the other: FROM: SP 8.5
SP was Sweet Pea. That's what I called him.

8.5, by then, needed no explanation.

I still have the ruler.

Battered. Torn. Taped.

Five moves.
Two hurricanes.
6  dog.

Still here.

This story has lasted so long that for my 60th birthday one of my gifts was an 8.5 mug.  It is still one of my favorites.
